Martha Mariam Samajam is the association of women in the Malankara Orthodox Church with Blessed Virgin Saint Mary as the patron Saint. ‘Martha’ is the feminine form of ‘Mar’ which means Saint in Syriac language. So Martha Mariam Samajam association named after St. Mary.
The Samajam mainly aims at spiritual growth of women. The Holy Mother, St. Mary showed us a good example of supporting the Christian Ministry. By reading the Bible, we can see that St. Mary followed Jesus throughout His ministry, even to His death at the cross. The motto of the Samajam is “Pray, Act and Shine.†Jesus taught us to pray, asked us to help the needy and called us to be the “light of the worldâ€. As Samajam members try to follow that in their daily life.
The first Sunday of every month, after the celebration of the Holy Qurbana, MMS members gather at the church and worship God by reading the Bible, singing devoional songs and sharing messages. They also support charitable organizations here and in India.
St. Thomas’s Samajam members have been participating in MMS activity at the diocesan levels as well. MMS members have been active many activities like regional talent show to MMS exams from the diocese.  In 2012, St. Thomas MMS hosted the Mid-West Regional conference for MMS. MMS members from Chicago, Kansas City, St. Louis and Detroit participated in the conference.
Martha Mariam Samajam has an integral role in the growth of St. Thomas Orthodox Church. May the intercession of St. Mary be a stronghold for all of us.
